Process

My goal with the Death of Baldr was to stylize it so the characters almost had a storybook quality to them. At this point in time, my art style was significantly influenced by anime and the DC animation art style. Since this was adapted from the Prose Edda, I thought it would look odd if the characters were drawn the way I typically designed characters. I looked for inspiration from medieval artwork, and found a bunch of stuff I could take notes from. At that point I just wanted to have fun with the design process, and decided to use crayons. I feel like using crayons make the drawing feel less serious. I can’t erase anyway, so I just kind of need to sit with every mark I make. It made the whole process feel more loose, and I think helped to inform the final designs.
